How to Apply

Candidates are encouraged to use the online application system to apply for any research program offered by the department. The details of the online system are available at: 

Selection Procedure

The applicant has to apply to IITM research program through the method prescribed ( When you are completing the application process, make sure you have the following information:
  1. Semester-wise score (annual score, where semester system is not followed) in the qualifying degree.
  2. Valid score on the qualifying examination and the details of the examination.
  3. Areas of specialization where the candidate wishes to apply.
  4. Statement of purpose (and summary of research proposal for doctoral candidates).

Once department receives the applications, the shortlist of candidates is prepared. The typical criteria for shortlisting are:

1.Academic performance
2.Performance in the qualifying examination.
3.Statement of purpose and research proposal
4.Shortlisted candidates are invited for interview session at the department.

On the day of the interview, candidates may be required to take Research Aptitude Test. This is generic test evaluating the candidates on analytical, language and research skills. The examination is mostly objective type with the possibility of an essay-type question. The candidates who have filled exemption from qualifying examination are required to take a separate department examination based on the areas of specialization chosen by the candidates. The documents supporting the applications are verified.

The Interview Process

First phase of interview is technical in nature, where the candidate is tested on the domain knowledge. A panel of faculty members in the area of specialization chosen by the candidates evaluates the candidates on the level of understanding of the domain. Candidates are selected based on their performance in the  interview.

Categories of Enrollment

Full-Time Registration
This is the regular full time mode where students are expected to work solely on their academic program. Student may be categorized as HTRA (Half-time Teaching/Research Assistant-ship), non-HTRA, QIP (Quality Improvement Program*) candidate, or UGC/CSIR fellow.

External Registration
This category consists of students sponsored by an industrial or business organization having R&D facilities and recognized by DST/DSIR of Government of India or IIT Madras.

Part-Time Registration
This category comprises of students sponsored by reputed university/institution/organization located in Chennai or neighbourhood.

Staff Member Registration
Staff members of IIT Madras are also eligible to apply for research programs of the department.

* Note that QIP program is for employees of state colleges and universities who can take a leave of absence and join the research program at IIT Madras. Details regarding this are available at:
