Welcome to the Admissions page of DoMS, IIT Madras. This page is aimed at providing a comprehensive view of the programs offered by our department and assisting you to navigate through the admission process.

At DoMS, in addition to an MBA, we strive for excellence in Research through programs tailored to nurture and condition the young talent in finding their inner creativity and satisfy the “explorer” in them. With the largest number of management scholars across India and distinguished alumni, we wish to continue the legacy of meaningful contributions to the society and the corporate world.

Three research programs are offered across six functional groups for scholars to carry out their research.

Research streams and programs

Research at DoMS is an agglomeration of 6 broad fields of management each encompassing specific thrust areas (not limited to them) on which the research scholars can explore potential gaps and add to the knowledge pool. A brief insight of each is given below:

Categories of enrollment

Full-Time Registration:

This is the regular full time mode where students are expected to work solely on their academic program. Student may be categorized as HTRA (Half-time Teaching/Research Assistant-ship), QIP (Quality Improvement Program*) candidate, or UGC/CSIR fellow.

External Registration:

This category consists of students sponsored by an industrial or business organization having R&D facilities and recognized by DST/DSIR of Government of India or IIT Madras.

Part-Time Registration:

This category comprises of students sponsored by reputed university/institution/organization located in Chennai or neighbourhood.

Staff Member Registration:

Staff members of IIT Madras are also eligible to apply for research programs of the department.

* Note that QIP program is for employees of state colleges and universities who can take a leave of absence and join the research program at IIT Madras. Details regarding this are available at: http://www.qip.iitm.ac.in/

Application process and eligibility

The candidates are encouraged to use the online application system to apply for any research program offered by the department.

Details regarding online system for application, fee structure and minimum eligibility are available in the Research Admission Portal: https://research.iitm.ac.in/

When you are completing the application process, make sure you have the following information:

Semester-wise score (annual score, where semester system is not followed) in the qualifying degree.
Valid score on the qualifying examination and the details of the examination.
Areas of specialization where the candidate wishes to apply.
Statement of purpose (and summary of research proposal for doctoral candidates).

Selection procedure

The applicant has to apply to IITM research program through the method prescribed (http://research.iitm.ac.in).

Once the department receives the applications, the shortlist of candidates is prepared. The typical criteria for shortlisting are:

Academic performance
Performance in the qualifying examination.
Statement of purpose and research proposal
Shortlisted candidates are invited for interview session at the department.

On the day of the interview, candidates may be required to take Research Aptitude Test. This is generic test evaluating the candidates on analytical, language and research skills. The examination is mostly objective type with the possibility of an essay-type question. The candidates who have filled exemption from qualifying examination are required to take a separate department examination based on the areas of specialization chosen by the candidates. The documents supporting the applications are verified.

Interview process:

First phase of interview is technical in nature, where the candidate is tested on the domain knowledge. A panel of faculty members in the area of specialization chosen by the candidates evaluates the candidates on the level of understanding of the domain. Candidates are selected based on their performance in the interview.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Along with Ph.D. and MS (by research), DoMS IIT Madras invites applications throughout the year for its Post-Doctoral research program. DoMS offers recent PhD graduates the chance to further their professional development, build on their research, and enrich their research and academic expertise. At DoMS, postdoctoral researchers have the opportunity to collaborate with the other professors and researchers, and work in an environment that supports and celebrates excellence.

Post-doctoral fellowships (PDF) in DoMS are available across distinguished management areas - Finance, Human Resources & Organizational Behavior, Information Systems and Integrative Management, Operations, Marketing.
